As spring begins the excitement for the first day of camp grows near. It is a time when campers excitedly fill out their applications, counselors apply for their positions and friends reminisce on past memories and the fun times to come. We hope this summer will be even better than the last!

2010 Camp Nubar Winter Reunion

Sometimes it feels like summer is ages away, so AGBU Camp Nubar
counselors, campers and alumni welcomed the New Year with a Camp Reunion
at St. Leon Armenian Church on Saturday, January 9, 2010. It was a
wintery day filled with fun, friends and food. Over a hundred campers
and counselors came from as far afield as New York, New Jersey,
Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Canada to attend the celebration and
reconnect with friends and colleagues from Camp Nubar.

As part of the day’s activities, reunited campers took part in two
classic Camp Nubar activities: “Dragon’s Mouth,” during which time
campers run around a gymnasium trying to avoid being tagged by a chain
of people, and “Knock-Out,” a variation of basketball.

“We receive requests each year for events that will reunite campers
while they anxiously await the start of camp. When campers and
counselors greeted one another, you could see their excitement and the
same spirit they exhibit during the summer months,” says Jennifer
Omartian, Camp Nubar Director 2009.

The buzz throughout the day was the excitement for the upcoming summer,
activities, and cabin arrangements. Everyone is anxious for the start of
yet another unforgettable summer at Camp Nubar, which will be filled
with returning and new campers and counselors from all over the world.

Campers Blog to Kick off 3rd Session

With over 140 campers this session, we wanted know what the buzz was all about at Camp Nubar. We asked campers to blog their thoughts about their past and present Camp Nubar experiences.

Rainy Day

A note from G3:

“The night of the thunderstorm brought all of us together. We all slept on the 2 bottoms bunks, bonded and offered support/comfort to eachother. We’re all looking forward to Sunday dinners because we want to break last years recrod of 8 platters of pilaf for 7 people.”

A note from G4:

“We experienced our first love nests and we have pet snakes named Slithers and Slippy who live under our cabin. Being in G4 makes us feel special and feel like kids are looking up to us. We live each day to our motto, “G4 don’t stress”. The activities help us all make new friends.”

“We arrived Saturday and we all felt very welcomed and freinds were made easily. The lip syncs helped us break out of our shells. All the activities helped improve and learn new skills. This camp has offered us the ability to make friends from all over the world.”

Week 1 In the Books

The first week of camp nubar is officially in the books. The weather has been cooperative and allowed to for all activities to run continuously.

Some campers have tried new things for the first time, like horseback riding and water skiing, while other campers continued to improve on already established skills in basketball and tennis.

Friday night’s dance featured a hero theme, and we asked campers to dress up in their favorite hero’s costume. Superman, batman, mario and luigi, and the joker all made special apperarances in the gym.

Camp Nubar Opens 2009: Session 1

7/6/09 — The gates to Camp Nubar welcomed campers on Saturday morning, kicking off an exciting summer.

Sunday was an action-packed day as the campers experienced a sample of the various activities around camp. After rotating throughout the cabins, the gym, arts and crafts barn and infirmary, each camper then had the opportunity to sign-up for their favorite activities for the session.

After an exhausting afternoon, each cabin prepared a lip sync for the evening activity. Beginning with G2 and ending with B5, all eight skits were entertaining. A dance off between B4-A and B5 was needed to settle a tie.

In between sneakers sliding along the tennis court, skis gliding across Lake Arax, and horses stamping on the trails, the campers are enjoying the nice weather and their first crack at Camp Nubar activities and fun.

Also, paintbrushes are slashing away to prepare for Monday’s Project Runway fashion show, so be on the lookout for pictures on the website.

To All Campers: Lama (the Activities Director) here, sending a list of some themed evening activities in each session for the 2009 Summer Season. Be sure to pack costumes and accessories according to the session you will be attending! Looking forward to seeing you at camp!

1^st Session:

Hawaiian Luau—Pack your grass skirts and floral button-up shirts… It’s time for Camp Nubar’s First Annual Luau! Tiki torches will light up the Waterfront Deck as campers and counselors dance and hula while watching the sun set over Lake Arax. *Some costume ideas include: grass skirts (with pants/shorts underneath!); floral shirts; leis; bright-colored flowers for campers’ hair*
Christmas in July—Make sure you’re dressed in Christmas colors and accessories when we combine the Camp Nubar spirit with the Christmas Spirit! A camp-wide Secret Santa gift exchange, Christmas carols and a decorated Christmas tree will make you forget it’s summer! *Some costume ideas include: red and green clothing; Santa hat; elf outfit; festive pin; festive earrings; Santa beard*

2^nd Session:

The Nubar Ho-Down!—The first dance of 2^ndsession will be a Ho-Down, Nubar Style! Campers, pack your flannel shirts, overalls cowboy/cowgirl hats and boots… You’re gonna swing your partner ‘round and ‘round and Dosey-Doe! *Some costume ideas include: overall jeans; flannel shirts; cowboy & cowgirl hats; cowboy & cowgirl boots*
Glitz ‘n’ Glam Hollywood —Come to the last dinner of 2^nd session dressed to impress while you walk down the red carpet to 2^nd Session’s Dinner-Dance Hollywood celebration! The more sparkly, glitzy and glam-y, the better! *Some costume ideas include: boas; colorful jewelry; smashin’ tuxedos; sunglasses; top hat; cane*

3^rd Session:

“Out of This World” Dance—To enter, you must resemble an extra-terrestrial being. Be creative while you pack but be sure to keep in mind that there will be time during the day to use Nubar’s Arts & Crafts resources! *Some costume ideas include: neon green and neon yellow t-shirts; neon-colored leggings; dark sunglasses; costume antennae*
“When In Rome…” Dance—When in Rome, do as the Romans; wear a TOGA! This dance will take Camp Nubar back in time to the Roman Empire. Women and men wore Togas and vine and flower-wrapped head pieces. Campers and counselors, be sure to pack an extra white sheet to make your toga! (Counselors will help to securely wrap the toga around each camper.) Check in your history textbooks or on the internet to get a good idea of what a toga looks like!

Numerous counselors will be heading up to Camp Nubar on Saturday, June 27th for CPR training. The rest of the staff for the 2009 summer will be arriving on Monday, June 29th. During this time the counselors will be preparing the camp for the campers.
